Gorringe Park Primary School Corporate Identity

Prompted by the re-organisation of schools in the London Borough of Merton, Gorringe had to change its entry to include children from nursery right up to the to the age when they enter high school. This was an ideal opportunity to take a fresh look at the School's visual identity.

The brief included a wide range requirements including stationery, uniform, signs, books and equipment. A second phase will include a new school prospectus and promotional literature.

The design concept.

The logo design for Gorringe Park Primary School was inspired by the close proximity of the school to Figges Marsh. The 'marsh icons' are based on local historical map symbols. The three elements represent the triangular shape of the marsh. The font is a modern sans serif typeface signifying the future. It is italicised and forward facing to give a dynamic feel to the overall logo.

The Figges Marsh connection offers a strong visual identity. In addition to the reference to the local history of Mitcham* there are also positive 'green' and ecological overtones. The design is very flexible, translates well in to all media including the computer screen and is economical to reproduce in black and white or in just two colours.

The Jade green and black colour scheme is distinctive and will stand out from other local schools. The colour has been selected from a uniform manufacturers standard catalogue and is therefore readily available. The colour can also be matched to printing industry standard inks (PMS 3272)

* Figge's marsh was indeed an actual marsh at one time. The local historical notes date back a long time, the area was named after William Figge, who held the land from 1357. The Merton Historical Society mention the terrain in their publication 'The Bridges and Roads of Merton' "... This track, to the east of Figges Marsh, had almost certainly originated as a detour on slightly higher land to avoid the area of boggy ground created by the Little Graveney as it flowed northwards to join the Graveney itself on the borders of Tooting."
