In 1998 Nigel Abbey won a runner-up prize in a Sunday Times design competition. The design brief was to create an exclusive British Airways tailfin design to fly the skies of Britain as we head to the new millennium. |
|
The design had to fulfill the following criteria. The
design must be modern, dynamic uplifting and immediately recognisable
as British. The
image must reflect something about your life, your community or part of
Britain you live in, representing new Britain in a contemporary way Suitable
for reproduction in whole or in part on an aircraft tailplane Work in up to six flat colours The winning design represents the best of the old and new. The flag element represents the old traditions and the paint brush icon is taken from computer painting and drawing programs, representing the Design and Art community in 'new Britain' - poised to enter the new millennium. The design also hints at the British sense of humour - with the slightly tongue-in-cheek half-painted livery. Judges of the competition included Sir Terence Conran, 'the guru of British design'.
